4. Space and Facility Resources

As the University has been developing much faster than the addition of space from infrastructure could afford, space is consistently on the agenda of institutional priorities.

Before the completion of the West Lane Academic Building tentatively by late 2022, CDMO has converted a sitting area at 5/F of M Building and some flats at the Old Hall into office spaces in mid-August 2021.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is the latest technology being embraced by the construction industry. HSUHK has already implemented the innovation and adopted BIM construction for our Residential Colleges in 2015 and the new West Lane Academic Building which is expected to complete by late 2022.

Some of the main benefits for using BIM include:
• Improved space management and communication of information
• Increased efficiencies and streamlined facility management
• Better understanding of operational and maintenance costs and usage with increased opportunities for energy and operational savings (ROI & Life Cycle Management)
• More accurate and complete as-built documentation for maintenance and future renovations
