1. Award and Certificate for Sustainability

The HSUHK was granted as the 528th World’s Most Sustainable University (out of 1183 universities) in 2023 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, initiated by Universitas Indonesia, on 5 December 2023.
 
The HSUHK was granted the Certificate of Good Level at the Hong Kong Green Organisation Certification, organized by Environmental Campaign Committee, on 26 January 2024. 
 

2. Tree pruning works before typhoon season

Tree pruning works (for about 100 nos. trees) have been arranged and shall be completed before coming typhoon season to minimize any risk of tree falling under strong wind.

3. Beautification works at Main Campus

CDMO has reviewed and re-organized the potted plants arrangement, which not only contribute to biodiversity of Campus, but also beautification of Campus.

4. Reuse of garden wastes

CDMO has setup compost boxes in Campus to fully utilize garden waste (say small branches and leaves) and transformed them into soil nutrients for further gardening use. Moreover, the pruned bamboos are further re-used as temporary support of planting.

5. 2023 Paper Saving Competition Award Ceremony

A less Paper Campaign to reduce paper consumption was launched in 2023, leaded by “Working Group on Energy Conservation and Sustainable Campus”, having a competition in controlling and discouraging paper usage of each individual office:

  • Every School, Department, Office, Centre is an individual unit and will participate in the competition automatically
  • The competition will be based on a year-on-year self-comparison (i.e. 2023 vs 2024)
  • The participated unit with highest saving will be the Champion, a certificate and small gifts will be awarded

The results are as follows:

6.Water recycling

The reuse and recycling of wastewater/greywater is a good practice for HSUHK to deploy its crucial role in the sustainable community. In February 2024, CDMO reused the swimming pool water meant for disposal to clean the driveways and common areas in the Campus.

7.Smart Recycling System

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) has launched a Pilot Programme on Smart Recycling Systems, to enhance the community recycling services and efficiency through application of technology, as well as testing in phases smart recycling equipment with the Internet of Things (IoT) as the skeleton technology, for local application. Under the Pilot Programme, EPD arranged a Smart Recycling Promotion Vehicle (SRPV) to tour HUSHK on 1 March 2024, to promote Smart Recycling Systems and let our staff and students experience the operation of Smart Recycling Systems.

8.Ecotrail tour sponsored by the Hang Seng Bank

An Ecotrail tour was held on 20 Mar, 2024. The student docents guided the participants to walk through 7 visiting points on campus, which included 9 trees (7 Terminalia mantaly 細葉欖仁 and 2 Elaeocarpus apiculatus 尖葉杜英) donated by the Hang Seng Bank, native trees, bamboos, compost, birds and insects. Additionally, participants were able to touch and smell the wood of the tree (Chinese name: 樟) and learnt about composting, further enhancing their experience and understanding of the natural elements encountered during the tour.
