To support sustainability, a food waste decomposer has been installed near M Canteen since December 2022.
Food waste is converted into carbon dioxide and wastewater and is then discharged into the sewage pipe before passing through a grease interceptor within 24 hours. There are water sprinkler systems inside to remove the odor and so no odor will be released to the environment.

Newsletter 202309 – Health and Safety Measures on Campus

1. Distribution of Rapid Test Kits (RATs) to units/offices
As mentioned in previous CDMO’s newsletter, the University has received some generous donations of anti-pandemic supplies (including hand sanitisers, surgical masks and rapid antigen test kits) from the individuals and organisations in support of the University’s anti-pandemic work during the pandemic period. In this connection, the University offered a pack (7 pcs) of RATs to each full-time staff member in July 2023 and urges all individuals who are in doubt about their own health condition, or individuals with infection risks (such as individuals who visited places with epidemic outbreaks or had contact with cases that tested positive), to undergo testing promptly for early identification to reduce the transmission risks of COVID-19.
2. Disinfecting Antimicrobial Coating
As the University has resumed face-to-face teaching on campus in the new academic year, CDMO has carried out all necessary disinfection measures to reduce the risk of epidemic outbreak and cross-infection inside the campus. Such measures will get the University prepared for and build resilience to any unforeseen pandemic in the future. To disinfect the space and the high-touch surfaces, CDMO has increased the cleaning frequency and hired service providers to manually spray disinfectant coating to the risky surfaces, the latest treatment was completed in July 2023.
3. Fire Safety
CDMO will organize safety talks and fire drills regularly to refresh the community the awareness of fire safety. We arranged a fire drill for M Building, Old Hall and Staff Quarters in June 2023, as usual, we invited the Fire Services Department to conduct a fire talk after the fire drills.
