  1. Food Waste Recycling Collection Point

To promote sustainability and enhance recycling efficiency on campus, CDMO has successfully applied the Food Waste Recycling Schemes from Environmental Protection Department (EPD) at HSUHK. The food waste collected through the recycling bins will be delivered to the Government’s treatment facilities for turning into electricity and compost.

2. Food and Furniture Donation

The food and furniture donations, made in partnership with Food Angel and Sustainable Office Solutions Ltd, provided resources to those in need while reducing waste by redistributing consumable food and furniture to the necessary stakeholders.

3. Beautification work on 6/F, corridor of M Building

Potted plants have been placed i at the 6th floor of the M building as a trial to beautify our surroundings. These plants help to create a more inviting atmosphere and bring a touch of greenery to the area.  CDMO will extend this project further after the completion of the abovesaid M Building Improvement Project.

4. Planting of Seasonal Flowers in various campus locations

To enhance the vibrant ambiance of our campus, CDMO schedules to plant diverse seasonal flowers across various locations, each carefully selected to bloom brilliantly throughout the year. In spring, the Belgian Azalea 比利時杜鵑will burst into colorful displays, welcoming the season with its vivid hues. During summer, the delicate blue and white blossoms of Plumbago auriculata 藍雪花will add a refreshing charm to sunlit spaces. As fall arrives, the golden brilliance of Allamanda cathartica 軟枝黃蟬and the subtle elegance of Galphimia glauca 金英will create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Finally, in winter, the resilient and striking Japanese camellia 山茶花 will bring timeless beauty to the campus with its rich, evergreen blooms.

In addition, numerous clusters of brilliant golden inflorescences of the Tabebuia chrysantha (黃花風鈴木) dangle from the branch tips behind Old Hall, creating a breathtaking, radiant display. numerous clusters of golden inflorescences hang from the tips of the branches, creating a splendid display. The entire tree is beautifully adorned with flowers that paint the landscape in shades of gold. Feel free to take a photo!

5. Campus Eco Tour Training for visually impaired individuals

Student Affairs Office organised a training session and invited CDMO Senior Arborist to introduce the flora and fauna around the campus on 12 February 2026 to students. Following the training, students will lead an eco tour of the campus for visually impaired individuals scheduled in mid-March 2026.

6. Campus Eco Tour for students and staff

CDMO Senior Arborist led a campus eco tour for students and staff around the main campus on 18 November 2025 to deepen understanding of the campus greenery, where he introduced various trees and shrubs, as well as the processes of composting and organic farming. During the tour, he also shared amusing facts about the birds and insects found around the campus.

7. Grey Water Reuse

The grey water reuse system has been successfully installed in both M Building and HSUHK Jockey Club Residential Colleges enabling efficient collection and reuse of water for plant irrigation. From the activation of the system through February 2026, a total of  29,563 gallons of greywater had been carefully collected and beneficially reused to irrigate plants across the buildings. This sustainable practice not only conserves precious freshwater resources but also supplies mild nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to support healthier plant growth and greener landscapes. 

8.Awards and Achievement

a. BEAM Plus Final Platinum and Green Building Award Finalist Recognition

Creative Humanities Hub received the BEAM Plus (2.0) Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus NB V2.0 from the Hong Kong Green Building Council. A commemorative plaque was presented to the University and unveiled on campus in late January 2026 to mark this achievement.

Creative Humanities Hub was also selected as a “Finalist” in the Green Building Award 2025, under the category “New Buildings: Completed Project – Institutional”.

b. Smart Energy Award – Energy Management Award

HSUHK won the Energy Management Award under the “Smart Energy Award 2025” by CLP Power Hong Kong Limited. The award was presented to HSUHK on 24 October 2025.

c. iRecycle Sustainability Award – Diamond Award

HSUHK won the Diamond Award under the “iRecycle Sustainability Award” by iRecycle Charity Foundation. The award was presented to HSUHK on 24 October 2025.

d. Wastewi$e Certificate – Excellent Level

By incorporating food donation and green procurement, such as purchasing paper products with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) content, we have improved waste management from ‘Good’ level to ‘Excellent’ level, under the “Wastewi$e Certificate”, granted by the Environmental Campaign Committee.

  1. Foundation Gallery

 A series of improvement works for Foundation Gallery on CR-1/F has been completed in September 2025, with the provision of double-layer automatic roller blind, ceiling type humidity control devices and the associated speaker system, including the setup of long term display corner for the exhibition relating to the University advised by the Working Group on Foundation Gallery Curation from time to time.  

  1. New Acoustic Booth for Meeting Use

To address the high demand for meeting rooms on campus, 2 new acoustic booths have been installed on M-4/F and B-1/F for use as ad hoc meeting spaces. Subject to user feedback, more booths may be introduced in due course.

  1. New Chairs for Yip Kit Chuen and Yuen Yuk Hing Hall & Auditorium

 To enhance the experience during assembly activities or gathering events in Yip Kit Chuen and Yuen Yuk Hing Hall & Auditorium, new widened chairs have been purchased.

  1. Briefings for Improvement works of M Building

A large-scale improvement project at M Building will take place from March to December 2026. CDMO has provided a series of project briefings in February 2026 to those affected departments/ offices on the scope of works and the precaution measures for the potential disturbances. While noise disturbances are inevitable, CDMO appreciates the users’ feedback, understanding and accommodation indeed!

  1. Precautionary measures / preparations for adverse weather
  • Our dedicated CDMO Emergency Response Team demonstrated exceptional readiness and professionalism throughout the challenging 2025 rainy season.Typhoon Wipha (20 July 2025) — With Hurricane Signal No. 10 hoisted, the team promptly secured campus facilities, cleared debris, and ensured safe conditions post-storm.
  • Black Rainstorm Signal (4 to 5 August 2025) — Amid record-breaking heavy rainfall and flooding risks, the team managed drainage, monitored vulnerable areas, and minimised disruptions.
  • Black Rainstorm Signal (14 August 2025) — During another intense downpour linked to tropical influences, quick interventions kept campus pathways safe and operations stable.
  • Typhoon Tapah (7 to 8 September 2025) — Under Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 conditions, the team coordinated shelter checks, tree inspections, and swift cleanup.
  • Typhoon Ragasa (23 to 24 September 2025) — Facing Super Typhoon conditions with Signal No. 10 again raised for the second time in 2025 (lasting over 10 hours), the team executed comprehensive precautionary measures. This included thorough inspections of campus buildings, securing windows and glass panels with protective reinforcements (e.g., adding protective blocks, tape, or shutters where needed), checking and clearing drainage outlets and channels to prevent flooding, and monitoring vulnerable areas for potential hazards.

  1. Recovery work after Super Typhoon Ragasa

Following Super Typhoon Ragasa, with the No. 10 signal hoisted, the landscape team promptly righted 15 collapsed trees and cleared broken branches and leaves across campus. These swift efforts restored a safe, hazard-free environment, allowing students and staff to resume daily activities on 24 September 2025.

  1. Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessment

DSE Assessment has been conducted by Safety Ambassadors to the DSE users. Based on the assessment result, DSE accessories such as mouse rests, wrist rests and footrests have been provided to required colleagues.

4. Fire Drills

CDMO organized a fire drill in conjunction with the Fire Services Department to enhance awareness among colleagues and students, promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. A fire safety seminar and drill took place on 14 January 2026, at S H Ho Academic Building, Lee Shau Kee Complex, and Creative Humanities Hub, followed by another drill on 23 February 2026, for the M Building, Staff Quarters, and Old Hall.

5. Disinfection Measures

CDMO is committed to maintaining a clean and hygienic campus environment. To safeguard the well-being of our community, we will continue collaborating with service providers for regular disinfection of common areas on campus. The most recent treatment was completed in January 2026.

6. Emergency Drill Arrangement

An emergency drill for first aid was conducted on 13 October 2025, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency handling procedures, ensuring that responsible first aiders are well-equipped to manage injury cases.

7. HPV Vaccination Catch-up Programme

 The second HPV Vaccination Catch-up Programme was conducted on 22 September 2025. This initiative aims to prevent cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases and is considered safe. Enrollment concluded on 5 September 2025, with a total of 271 students registered.

  1. Enhancement of Campus Facility Services (Main Campus)

a. Sanitary & Hygiene Facility Improvements

  • Toilet Seat Sanitizer Dispensers — Installed in all male, female, and accessible restrooms to elevate hygiene standards. Users can conveniently disinfect the seat before use, effectively reducing bacteria and viruses for improved personal hygiene and safety.
  • Transparent Toilet Paper Dispensers — The older dispensers have been replaced with transparent paper dispensers. Their clear design allows easy visual monitoring of paper levels, ensuring consistent availability, reducing waste, and streamlining maintenance.
  • New Toilet Signage — Updated signs to remind users about key precautions and best practices when using restrooms.

b. Signage & Wayfinding Enhancements

  • New Campus Information and Feedback Signage — New and clear signs for “Campus Information” and “Facilities & Services Feedback” have been installed in selected locations on campus. The initiative improves accessibility to key information while promoting greater community engagement by inviting feedback on facilities and services, supporting continuous improvement, and a more inclusive environment.
  • New CCTV Signage — Added signage to raise awareness of security  in relevant areas.
  • New Carpark Signage — Implemented voluntary carpark-sharing signage for designated carparking spaces, opening available spaces for general use   In addition, the displayed signages at Priority Reserved Parking area are also updated to improve visual identification. 

c. Security & Entrance Upgrades

  • Security Counter Upgrade at 1/F Entrance, Lee Quo Wei Academic Building (D) — Upgraded to better equipped with a PC workstation integrated with the CCTV system for real-time monitoring and enhancement in security.

2. New E-Directory at S H Ho Academic Building  

The new E-Directories are installed at S H Ho Academic Building in November 2025 to improve clarity with added potential as e-notice boards. More e-directories will be installed in campus-wide locations by phase, expected to complete by the end of June 2026.

3. Smoking Control in the Vicinity of the Campus  

Arising from the Smoking (Public Health) Ordinance (Cap. 371) which took effect on 1 January 2026, CDMO has implemented a comprehensive smoking control initiative. Security Guards conduct frequent spot checks at all main campus entrances.  “No Smoking” signs have also been posted around the campus perimeter to raise awareness among HSU members and help maintain a consistently smoke-free environment.

4. New vending machines on Campus 

New Halal Food Corner, located at the covered area underneath the Yip Kit Chuen and Yuen Yuk Hing Hall, started its operation in September 2025 to meet diverse dietary needs and enhance inclusiveness for HSUHK students and staff. 

New Vita Fresh Tea Vending Machines, located at the corridor near M Canteen, began operation in November 2025 to provide more healthy drink options to HSUHK students and staff. 

  1. Enhancement of Campus Facility Services (The Create, WestK)

a. Concierge Services

CDMO has prepared a welcome card for teachers to assist them effectively master the use of the IT equipment and showcase the IT accessories we offer to support their teaching.  The welcome card also listed multiple channels for communication and interaction with teachers, such as telephone number, email address, and website, so that teachers can easily reach us for assistance.

b. New Provisions

Since the usage of The Create continues to increase, CDMO is keenly aware of users’ needs for restroom amenities. Similar to our campus, toilet seat disinfectants and an extra paper towel dispenser have been installed before the start of this academic year.  Additionally, to further enhance the user experience, CDMO also installed shelves in each toilet cubicle for small items and placed air-purifying potted plants near the sinks, bringing a fresh and clean atmosphere for users.

In addition to improving the restroom amenities, CDMO has also enhanced some facilities in common areas, such as providing lockers for students, installing power sockets on the desks of smart stations and adding additional payment methods to the coffee machine in order to provide high-quality of service.

CDMO Biannual Newsletter - March 2026

The CDMO Newsletter is a biannual electronic publication of the Campus Development and Management Office. It is intended to inform students and staff members about the latest news and highlights of the University in areas encompassing campus development, FM services, health and safety and sustainability. We welcome and appreciate the support of the HSUHK community to jointly make our campus a better place for all.

  1. Smart Recycling Bins

Smart Recycling Bins, launched on 27 March 2025 under the Environmental Protection Department’s Pilot Programme, boosted recycling efficiency.

2. Sustainable Campus E-Postcard

To raise awareness and inspire action, we launched our Green Spaces e-Postcard Series on 29 May 2025. These beautifully designed postcards highlight the incredible benefits of our campus flora—from purifying the air and supporting biodiversity to uplifting our mood and creating a peaceful environment.

  1. Campus Tour for visually impaired visitors

    HSUHK held a campus tour for visually impaired visitors on 29 March 2025. CDMO staff provided training for student docents to learn about green practices and sustainability on campus before the tour. Students led the tour and activities that involved touch and sound. They showcased the plants and animals on campus and shared our sustainability efforts, emphasizing our commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.

  1. Tree planting at Lee Quo Wei Academic Building

    Seven new trees of the species Senna surattensis (黃槐), were planted on 4/F podium of the Lee Quo Wei Academic Building in May, replacing problematic trees due to health issues to ensure safety and prevent the risk of falling.

  1. Technical Visit to HSUHK by BEAM Society

    Leaders and members of BEAM Society conducted a technical visit to HSUHK on 20 June 2025 to learn about HSUHK’s work in sustainability measures. The tour featured an elaborate campus tour guided by CDMO staff on our campus sustainability development for industry professionals to gain firsthand knowledge of HSUHK’s ethos in promoting green campus and BEAM Plus Platinum rated buildings.

  1. BEAM Plus Final Platinum rating to Creative Humanities Hub

    The Creative Humanities Hub was awarded Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings Version 2.0 on 11 June 2025, reflecting HSUHK’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and environmental excellence.

    There are a total of 5 campus development projects receiving Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Building since 2013.

  1. Community Service – Food Donation

    A food donation drive, scheduled on 8 July 2025 with Food Angel, provided nutritious meals to those in need while reducing wastage of food still good for consumption.

8. Fallow Period for Organic Farm in Summer 2025

Regular maintenance work at the organic farm, including infrastructure upkeep, mowing, and weeding, was conducted in the summer to create a healthy soil environment for the upcoming season.

9. Proactive Tree Maintenance and Advanced Assessments of Tree Conditions

Before the typhoon season, we used advanced tree assessment tools including resistograph and sonic tomograph to evaluate the internal structure of trees to identify potential problems. This allowed us to proactively remove any trees with serious defects. Additionally, we carried out tree pruning, which included removing dead or broken branches, thinning the crown, and reducing the crown size. These measures help reduce the risk of falling trees and branches during adverse weather conditions. Keeping our campus community safe remains our top priority.
